An Ohio kindergarten teacher who recorded nude students is only the latest.

By M Dolon Hickmon

March 9, 2015 – the Associated Press reports that prosecutors in Ashland County, Ohio have charged kindergarten teacher Elliot Gornall, 32, with recording dozens of young children in various states of undress, using a miniature spy camera hung in the bathroom at the elementary school where he worked. Gornell, who resigned his teaching post late last year amid charges of felony drug possession, now faces 23 counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material and additional counts of attempting the same. Gornell has also been charged with misdemeanors related to stolen children’s underwear found in his home during a search linked to the earlier drug charges.

When it comes to school employees exploiting students on school property, Gornell is merely the latest.

11063016_344051092466802_1766725450_nIn 2014, television station WQAD reported that guilty pleas had been entered by Ian Dishon Isabel, 29, charged with placing cameras disguised as electrical junction boxes in the stalls of multiple girls’ restrooms around Hayes Elementary School, where he headed an after-school program. And in 2013, former elementary school teacher Kimberly Ann Crain11046996_344051059133472_1770267147_n confessed to having taken up-skirt pictures of her third-grade students using a camera concealed under a table in her classroom.  Crain’s students were also videotaped naked, while changing clothes in an off-campus bathroom. The images were later sent to Crain’s online boyfriend.

11069169_344051069133471_768964618_nOther on-campus sex crimes have been even more brazen. In 2013, former Los Angeles school district teacher Mark Berndt, then 62, pleaded no contest to 23 felony counts related to sexual fetish images he’d created in his elementary school classroom – images that included pictures of blindfolded 6 to 10 year old boys and girls with semen-filled spoons held at their lips and 3-inch cockroaches crawling on their faces. Following discovery of the images, students confirmed that they’d been tricked into consuming liquid from a spoon, during so-called “tasting games”. A spoon recovered from the classroom trashcan tested positive for Mark Berndt’s semen.  Following his arrest, a search of Berndt’s home led to the discovery of more than 100 similar photos as well as adult pornography that “mirrored the bondage-type photos of the children”, according to police.

Spanking Device Marketed to Christians Results in Arrest

"The Rod"

“The Means Prescribed By God” – In an undated photo from an article on, Susan Lawrence displays “The Rod”, a $5 whipping tool marketed exclusively to Christian parents.

Yates County, NY – “Spoons are for cooking, belts are for holding up pants, hands are for loving, and rods are for chastening,” read an advertisement for THE ROD, encountered by homeschooling mother Susan Lawrence in the  pages of Home School Digest.

A competing device, marketed by Child Training Resources of Bakersfield, California  was sold alongside controversial parenting books To Train up a Child, by Michael Pearl, and What the Bible Says About Child Training, by Richard Fugate.  Pearl’s book has been linked to at least three child abuse deaths, while Fugate’s book was once the subject of a Justice Department alert, as well as having been “used in court cases in a number of states as a defense of those accused of child abuse,” both according to an article by Diane Divoky in the Sacramento Bee.  Child Training Resources even went so far as to offer free samples of their whipping device to “leaders of child training classes with 15 or more people.”

Shocked, Susan Lawrence began a national campaign to ban the marketing of child-whipping devices in the United States. Facing mounting media scrutiny and a public backlash, THE ROD and its 9″ long plastic competitor were both voluntarily taken off the market–however, the devices were not recalled and at least one parent has since been arrested for allegedly abusing a child using a nylon whipping stick.

On December 1, 2010, reported that Terry Nesbit, 44, was arrested for endangering the welfare of a child, following an investigation into possible excessive corporal punishment. According to the news report, police said the child suffered bruising to the buttocks and legs after being spanked with the nylon rod. Nesbit was arraigned in Town of Benton Court. A 2014 request made under the state’s Freedom of Information Act failed to locate a record of the case’s final disposition.

Nicholas Ducote, now 25, recalled being punished with THE ROD. “My parents got one when I was ten or eleven. It was a ‘thing’ for awhile; all the fundamentalist homeschool moms in New Orleans were getting one.” THE ROD quickly became his parents’ implement of choice. “Usually on my naked ass.” Asked to describe the punishment, Ducote said, “It was all about the flick of the wrist – they could make it hurt like [expletive] if they flipped it just right.” Ducote’s younger sister got the same treatment. “I don’t remember exactly when they introduced it, but it was before her second birthday.”

“It sat on the fireplace mantle in the den, as a visual reminder of pain. They used it on my sister almost exclusively. They had her trained like a dog – absolute obedience.”

Asked what he would say, if he were able to speak to the marketers of THE ROD and similar products, Ducote said, “What can you tell someone who thinks it’s OK to profit from a tool used to inflict invisible beatings on children?”

“Child Training Murder” – Spanked to Death in the Name of Jesus

Shatz MugshotApril 11, 2011 - “spank him until it’s obvious he’s totally broken.” Chilling words from page fifty-nine of Michael Pearl’s controversial parenting guide, ‘To Train Up A Child’.  The book was discovered at the home of Kevin and Elizabeth Shatz, along with the battered body of their adopted daughter, Lydia, who died as result of months of abuse.  An older daughter required hospitalization for abuse related injuries, but survived.

According to testimony, the Shatz’s were following the written instructions of Tennessee pastor Michael Pearl, when they beat their daughters with a fifteen-inch length of plumbing supply line. Lydia died from a severe beating instigated by her failure to properly pronounce a word. The case marked the second time that Pearl’s book had been linked to a child abuse death in a matter of a few years. A third child was ‘trained’ to death by followers of Michael Pearl a few years later. An online petition to remove the book from currently has tens of thousands of signatures.

Both parents were sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to a litany of child abuse charges.

Deacon Had Sexual Motive for Spanking Students

Reverend Alan Morris

Jailed: Pedophile spanking fetishist Alan Morris was the chief disciplinarian at an all-boys school for nearly two decades.

Deacon Had Sexual Motive for Spanking Students

Reverend Alan Morris, 64, kept a disturbing ‘bag of implements’ – including a leather strap, a cane and a wooden spoon – in his chemistry lab at an all-boys grammar school.

[This article originally appeared in The Freethinker.]

August 29, 2014 – By M Dolon Hickmon -The Manchester Evening News has reported that school teacher and church deacon Alan Morris has been jailed for nine years for  abusing ten boys over a 17 year period while working as a chemistry teacher at St Ambrose RC College in Altrincham. The court heard that the children were taken to a small room inside of Morris’s chemistry lab, where they were stripped, beaten and indecently assaulted. In some cases, students were also made to beat each other.

One of Morris’s victims was Scott Morgan, son of Manchester United football star Willie Morgan. Scott Morgan, now aged 43, waived his right to anonymity in order to share the full story of his abuse with the public. He said: “I was really quiet at school. That’s why he picked on me. He had his favorites, those he liked to punish. You just knew when it was your turn. It was horrible. You just knew it was coming. You just shut your eyes and waited for it.”

While victims bent over a stool awaiting their punishment, Morris would line up his implements of torture: canes, shoes, and a leather strap, as well as a homemade pink rubber paddle that Morris referred to as the Paddywhacker.

Scott Morgan was subject to repeated abuse over several years, beginning at the age of eleven. “You would go into his little room and sometimes it would be five minutes before he hit you. You could hear him going ‘hmmmmm’ as he chose the implement.”

Morgan also recalled instances of group beatings, in which Morris whipped as many as “nine or ten” naked children at the same time. Morgan said: “He would go around hitting everybody in turn. He made us all pull our pants down. He was getting a kick out of it. The longer he could drag it out the better. That’s how he spent his lunch-times and always in his little room.”

Other reports indicate that Alan Morris was permitted to function as the “chief policeman” of the school, with fellow teachers providing him a steady stream of victims to “punish”.

Morgan added: “All the teachers knew what Morris was like. They knew what was going on but would not go up against him because he was the deputy headmaster. We were all ruled by fear.”

Deputy Video Records Children’s Spankings For Millionaire Boyfriend

Robin Leigh PagoriaMay 26, 2011 – Polk County Florida – According to investigators, 45-year-old Robin Leigh Pagoria handcuffed a pair of naked children to a home-made spanking table, beat them with a paddle, inflicting “substantial” wounds, then sent videos of the incidents to her millionaire boyfriend, who she’d met on an online spanking fetish website called

Prior to her arrest on multiple abuse- and child-pornography related charges, Pagoria worked as a corrections officer in the Polk County jail. Interviewed about the case, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd is reported to have said, “There aren’t words to describe my anger with her.”

According to arrest reports, Pagoria initially claimed she videotaped the sessions so she could “‘fine-tune’ her technique.” It was these observations, she said, that led her to cut the legs off one side of the table and to delay between blows for “maximum burn.” Officers later discovered videos on Pagoria’s cell phone. In them,  two female victims, aged ten and eighteen, were forced to strip and subjected to as many 62 blows apiece. The children could be heard screaming; the videos were each approximately ten minutes long.

Christopher LobbanPagoria later admitted to having a lifelong spanking fetish. Her boyfriend, Christopher Donald Lobban, 54, of Perth, Australia, was charged with six child sex and abuse charges related to Pagoria’s abuse. Police searched Lobban’s home on May 30, 2011 and recovered pictures, chat logs, and other evidence detailing his role. According to Pagoria and the victims, Christopher Lobban directed the beatings over the internet.

Pagoria plead guilty to abuse and pornography charges in 2013, and was sentenced to twenty-years. As of March 2014, Christopher Lobban remained behind bars in Australia, awaiting extradition. He faces up to life in prison.

“Disciplined” to Death – Did Pastor’s Advice Influence Child Murderer?

Michael Pearl TTUACSmithfield, NC - In 2008, adoptive mother Lynn Paddock was convicted of torture and murder, in death of her four-year-old son adopted son Sean.  Six surviving children testified at trial that they had been beaten  almost daily with flexible plastic rods, wooden spoons and other devices. A forensic pediatrician described the abuse as “ritualistic torture”, while Assistant Johnston County District Attorney Paul Jackson showed jurors the “whipping stick” Paddock used on the children, as well as photos of bruises on their bodies.

“This was soul murder,” Jackson said.

Testifying at trial, Lynn Paddock  said she and her husband decided to use discipline techniques they learned from the evangelical Rev. Michael Pearl,  who publishes books and articles on how to raise obedient  children.

“We liked Michael Pearl’s (system) because it was quick (and) it didn’t demean the child and bring their self-esteem down,” she said. As of 2014, the death of Sean Paddock is one of three confirmed deaths circumstantially linked to Pearl’s parenting guide, To Train Up A Child. An online petition to remove the book from now has tens of thousands of signatures.
